Festive Missouri Locations to Shoot Your Next Holiday Special

Looking for the perfect backdrop to capture some holiday magic? Missouri offers a treasure trove of festive locations that combine charm, history, and holiday cheer. From glittering light displays, to historic landmarks, and stunning winter scenery, Missouri has something special to set the stage for your next holiday production.
Alley Spring and Mill – Eminence, Mo.
Alley Spring and Mill is a history-packed, picturesque stop within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The charming red mill, integral to the lives of many in the early 1900s, has been restored for visitors to explore. Contrasting with the impeccably blue water and lush surrounding nature, Alley Spring and Mill offers an unbelievable winter scene.
Big Cedar Lodge – Ridgedale, Mo.
Big Cedar Lodge is Missouri’s premiere wilderness retreat. In addition to extravagant lodging, the massive property includes an arcade, marina, nature area, and more. During the holiday season, the resort is decorated with more than 4 million sparkling lights. From November to February, an ice rink and Christmas tree light show overlooks Table Rock Lake, enhancing the holiday atmosphere. The festive cheer even extends underground to the marvelous Lost Canyon Cave. A wide array of holiday activities keeps the lodge buzzing with holiday spirit all season long.
Historic Downtown Hannibal – Hannibal, Mo.
Charming downtown Hannibal transports visitors to the past era of Huckleberry Finn. The carefully restored streets are full of historic architecture, local businesses, and quirky character. During the holiday season, the nostalgic main streets are transformed into a Victorian Festival of Christmas, featuring decorated storefronts, carriage rides, and carolers. The Hannibal Public Library also hosts a Kwanzaa celebration in late December.
Hannibal was featured in the 1918 film Huck and Tom.
Missouri Botanical Garden – St. Louis, Mo.
The Missouri Botanical Garden, one of the oldest in the country, is an iconic Missouri landmark. Located in the core of south St. Louis, the Garden promotes learning, conservation, and holiday cheer. From mid-November to early January, the Garden transforms into a festive wonderland with more than 2 million dazzling lights illuminating its exhibits. The Garden Glow is often considered one of the best light displays in the city.
The Missouri Botanical Garden was featured in the 1974 film The World of Buckminster Fuller, along with a 2017 episode of Great American Railroad Journeys.
Prairie Barn Winery & Christmas Tree Farm – St. James, Mo.
Prairie Barn Winery & Christmas Tree Farm is located in the heart of Missouri wine country. In addition to its rustic atmosphere and boutique wines, the property grows more than 3,000 Christmas trees in three varieties each year. The winery also hosts multiple holiday events throughout the season, keeping the winter spirit bright.
Shakespeare Chateau Inn & Gardens – St. Joseph, Mo.
Shakespeare Chateau Inn & Gardens is a beautifully restored 19th-century mansion overlooking the Missouri River and historic town of St. Joseph. Originally constructed by local bank tycoon, Nathan Phipps, the building now serves as a luxury bed-and-breakfast. The grand property and surrounding gardens are lavishly decorated for the holidays, creating a truly opulent winter setting.
Shakespeare Chateau was the primary filming location for the 2019 film Christmas at the Chateau.
Union Station – Kansas City, Mo.
The iconic Union Station boasts 850,000 square feet of impressive architecture. Originally a rail traffic hub, the space has been modernized to feature restaurants, a science museum, live theater, and more. From late November to early January, the grand station becomes a whimsical winter village during Holiday Reflections. The vibrant indoor display features a glittering Christmas tree, singing reindeer, and animated shop windows.
Union Station has been featured in many movies, TV shows, and music videos. Perhaps most notably, Robert Altman’s 1996 film Kansas City heavily highlights the historic station. Additionally, episodes of Truman, American Ninja Warrior, and Ghost Adventures have been shot at Union Station.
